I have always loved storytelling and children’s books. This love came from the nightly bedtime storytelling from my mother. When my children were small we went to the library weekly. They too became book lovers. To this day, my youngest son (now all grown up), will flange the pages of a good book, just to inhale the smell!
Working for a large park system and the Jane Goodall, "Roots and Shoots" program allowed me to educate children early about the environment, recycling and endangered species. We would host gatherings with games and crafts to allow children to learn by doing, in the importance of recycling and helping their community and essentially the environment.
Writing a variety of genres is most appealing to me. Some of my works include; pictures books with humor with an embedded message for children. I'm also working on non-fiction picture book biographies, as I love history. Art and illustration is a passion of mine and I've prepared a book dummy on one of my mother's folktales.
I received my certification in children’s book publishing from The Institute of Children’s Literature. A large chunk of my career was spent working for a large park system in VA and writing everything from manuals, how-to's and newsletters and educating children about the environment. My background is in creative writing. I've taken in depth picture book dummy courses, picture book illustration courses to improve my craft. Art is another love of mine and my favorite mediums are watercolor and pen & ink, which I've studied over the years with several local artists.
Years ago I had the pleasure of meeting Patricia Polacco at a book signing. She told me about the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI), and I have been an active member since. I'm a member of an active critique group. I reside in Annapolis, MD with my husband and bernese mountain dog, Baloo. We have three grown children, and three grandchildren. I love hiking and yoga to refresh and recharge in these difficult times.
